Databases

Our database vendors require that we limit use of our databases to students, staff, and residents of our service area and surrounding areas. If you wish to use any database below that require user ID's, passwords, etc., we ask that you email, fax, write, or call us and give us your contact information and reason you wish to use our databases. We will gladly provide you with the information to access these databases.

African American Song Library: The first online resource to document the history of African American music in an online music listening service. The collection contains a diverse range of genres such as jazz, blues, gospel, ragtime, folk songs, and narratives, among others.

American National Biography: An exploration of American history through the lives of the men & women who shaped the nation.

American History in Video: provides the largest and richest collection of video available online for the study of American history, with 2,000 hours and more than 5,000 titles on completion. The collection allows students and researchers to analyze historical events, and the presentation of historical events over time, through commercial and governmental newsreels, archival footage, public affairs footage, and important documentaries. This release includes over 1260 titles, equaling approximately 420 hours.

A to Z Maps Online: The worlds largest subscription-based database of proprietary, royalty-free world, continent, country, and state maps. Included in the 4,000+ maps are: political maps, physical maps, outline maps, population maps, precipitation maps, climate maps, and other thematic maps. New maps are added to the collection every month.

Blue Skyways: Contains many library databases and other public websites. Note: A Kansas Library Card, available from Allen library or your local public library will enable you to access all these sites.

Classical Music Library: The world's largest multi-label database of Classical music recordings for listening and learning in libraries. Coverage of repertoire is increasing as new labels are added with a particular focus on content that meets the needs of educators and students. Never before have institutions been able to offer library users such ease of access to our recorded heritage - both recordings of the past and new releases. Music may be downloaded.

Contemporary World Music:
Contains 50,000 tracks that delivers the sounds of all regions from every continent. The database will contain important genres such as reggae, worldbeat, neo-traditional, world fusion, Balkanic jazz, African film, Bollywood, Arab swing and jazz, and other genres such as traditional music - Indian classical, fado, flamenco, klezmer, zydeco, gospel, gagaku, and more.

Smithsonian Global Sound for Libraries, produced in partnership with Smithsonian Folkways Recordings, is a virtual encyclopedia of the world's musical and aural traditions. The collection provides educators, students, and interested listeners with an unprecedented variety of online resources that support the creation, continuity, and preservation of diverse musical forms.

American Song: Is a history database that will contain 50,000 tracks that allows people to hear and feel the music from America's past. The database will include songs by and about American Indians, miners, immigrants, slaves, children, pioneers, and cowboys. Included in the database are the songs of Civil Rights, political campaigns, Prohibition, the Revolutionary War, the Civil War, anti-war protests, and more.

EBSCO Academic Search Elite (EBSCO Help pdf) Includes many other types of databases which provide full text publications including peer-reviewed journals. In addition to the full text, indexing and abstracts are provided for all periodicals and journals in the collection. Many date back as far as 1985.

Encyclopedia Britannica Online Academic Edition: Contains Encyclopedia Britannica Online, Merriam-Webster Dictionary & Collegiate Thesaurus.

Facts on File: Current events, history, and a lot more. Choose World News Digest, Issues and Controversies, or Today’s Science.

The State Library of Kansas- Kansas Library Catalog: Statewide library material available through Interlibrary Loan.

NetLibrary Ready Reference Collection: This group of e-books are owned by Allen. This is a completely different set than that found in Blue Skyways (Kansas owned) database. Contains thousands (more added periodically) of books published currently.

Oxford Reference Online: Online access to the world’s most trusted reference collection. Specific dictionaries in many subjects as well as timelines are available; can be interpreted in 4 languages.

Oxford Language Dictionaries Online: Find words anywhere in the dictionary, including translations and example sentences.

Vault Career Library: A database to help students choose a career path. This contains information about many major companies in the United States. This database is for the sole use of Allen Community College current undergraduate students, faculty and staff.

World Book the new version of World Book Reference center, with articles, multimedia web sites, and much more. World Book Advanced has more that 1.3 million pages of primary source documents -  books, documents, selections-fully integrated with the encyclopedia content. Research and teaching tools include timelines, citation builder, and saved research. Some information can be translated into other languages.
